The First Time I Left Home

The Story Behind Charlie

When I got to know Charlie it was the beggining of an adventure of a lifetime

By NICK JOHNSON

I was working at a machine shop making plastic injection molding parts for cars and medical parts and things like, when my probation period was over they offered me a $0.25 per hour raise. I was kind of insulted because I was working harder than anyone else in the shop. I worked harder than everyone else for a reason and that reason was so they would realize what a great worker I am and give me more money, pay me more. Well to make a long story short I quit my job the next day, wasn't sure what I was going to do but I knew it wasn't going to be working in a factory.

By coincidence, the very next day A friend of mine asked me if I wanted to go out to Bishop California and work on a construction job laying carpet for a small Furniture Company. I said yes, and we left the following day. I had $400 in my pocket and a box full of tools, that's all I brought with me.

This trip was going to change our lives forever and I never went back to my home in Southern California

We were off for a new adventure, we had no idea what to expect but we were just driving hours and hours through the desert to get to this job that we had no idea what was going to be like or who we are going to be working for.

The adventure was just beginning, we had high hopes we were in very good spirits and having a fantastic time and one of the best times of my life. This was the first time I'd ever left home and we just picked up and left. It was crazy I never did things like this, but there's a first time for everything.

We got to the job site and everything was fine, we work for this little furniture store and they sold carpet.

The people were nice the jobs were great we worked everyday for about 3 weeks, and then things went a little downhill. We were still having a great time but the problem was they ran out of work for us to do, it wasn't that they didn't like our work or anything like that it's just that they didn't have any carpet layers for a year or so before we got there, so they had all these jobs backed up and then when we got there we did all the jobs that hadn't been done for a while and then they ran out of new jobs.

My buddy Charlie asked me if I wanted to go to Lake Tahoe which was another 3 hours north of where we are working now just to check it out, of course I said yes. It was one of the best decisions of my life. We got to Lake Tahoe and it was the most amazing thing when we came over the hill and came down into the valley where the lake was is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen in my life.

We had been there about 3 days and my buddy Charlie and found add in the newspaper and they wanted carpet layers. So we went down for an interview and got the job so we'd only been there 3 days and had a job not just a job but a good paying job.

There are a lot of carpet layers at this store it was very busy shop, we worked most of the time but we almost always got one day off during the week so we would work 4 days a week. That was perfect for me because I wanted to ski, I skied the other three days of the week and anytime I had time off I would ski.

I bought a ski pass for two different ski resorts and I would alternate between the two they were some of the most beautiful resorts in the world. I would ski all the time even at night some of the ski resorts headlights on the slopes. We had one ski resort that was in the middle of town and I could get there in 5 minutes, so if I had an hour or two to kill I can just go over there and take a few runs because I had a pass that allowed me to ski whenever I wanted to. It wasn't my favorite Resort but it was okay.

From the top of the mountain you could see for hundreds of miles, have you have an experience that you need to go to Lake Tahoe and go to the top of the mountain even if you don't ski. You can take the gondola up and just go up to the restaurant at the top of the mountain.  there are two different gondolas you can take one of those at the South Shore one is at the North Shore, they both have awesome views and you'll never get tired of going there.

We Came from Southern California where it was warm all the time and it was tough getting used to the cold weather but after awhile it really didn't feel cold to me. We would be driving to work and we would pass a school bus stopped and the girls would have mini skirts on and we be in the truck shivering, what was wrong with this? I thought those girls were crazy and that no one could actually live here full-time it's just too cold, but this is when I first moved there it took about a year for me to get totally acclimated to the cold but the second winter that we were there was awesome it didn't even seem cold to me.

It's been 15 years since then and I still live in Lake Tahoe, although my life is much different now and I don't ski much anymore we still have a great time. I have new hobbies new interest we race cars and Reno and where into saving the Earth. I have a friend in Austin Texas that has a junk removal company that is very concerned with saving the Earth and they do responsible junk removal which is awesome, I think I will be going to work with him one of these days when I get tired of being in Lake Tahoe.
